Neck Pain and TreatmentDo you suffer from pain, limited mobility, and fatigue due to old injuries, desk-bound work or habitual poor posture?
While self-education and treatment is important, it can really help to get a skilled neck massage. I use hot stones to minimize the need for painful finger pressure on muscles that are in spasm, and work the deep muscles in the neck, shoulder and back areas to release spasms and allow the vertebrae to realign themselves. It is logical that muscles pull bones out of place, and not the other way around. This means that therapeutic massage has an important role to play in treatment. You can usually feel if the cervical bones or vertebral discs of your neck are out of place or under pressure. You may be able to feel that the bones bulge out or indent away from the natural cervical curve. \Perhaps you will be able to feel a slighter greater sensitivity to pressure between one set of vertebrae than the others. This is usually associated with a painful knot or spasm in the adjacent muscles. There may also be sensations of numbness or tingling in the hands and arms which come and go. (Please, if these sensations ever become continuous, or progressively worse, seek a diagnosis from a neurologist without delay.) While numbness and tingling are common symptoms of relatively minor musculo-skeletal problems, which respond to treatment of the soft tissues, they can also be caused by much more serious medical problems which need to be correctly diagnosed as soon as possible. If your neck vertebrae and discs are often misaligned, it's important to learn good posture and the right therapeutic exercises to help build up strength and correct muscular imbalances. (Pilates, Alexander Technique and Tai Chi are great techniques for helping to correct your carriage. A tight neck usually goes with a clenched and stiff jaw. The jaw should always be massaged when treating the neck, and simply unclenching your jaw and changing your posture can be very helpful for a stiff neck. A compressed, misaligned neck has a significant role to play in chronic headaches, and often massage, combined with gentle traction and stretching, will bring about a long term improvement. |
